Course Selection and Registration
Course / Selection Registration
In the spring, students receive the list of courses for which they are registering for the following year. Courses that are electives or have low enrollment may not be offered. The only course changes that will be given consideration are those necessitated by a student’s academic performance (for example, failing a course, taking a course with department approval in summer school, necessary level changes, technical errors, or elimination of a requested course).
Schedule Changes
The school master schedule is built in the spring based upon student needs, student requests, teacher and counselor recommendations, and parent participation. Students should regard the schedule they receive as a “contract”: the school has provided the courses, and the student has an obligation to attend and participate in those classes. Schedule changes will be permitted only under the specific circumstances described below.
Dropping courses to accommodate a personal schedule cannot be accommodated. All schedule changes must be officially approved by administration in collaboration with the School Counseling office. Courses dropped after October 1st will result in the appropriate labeling on the student’s transcript.
Because TRMC is a small school, scheduling constraints such as classroom size and staffing affect the schedule, so changes are extremely difficult. Some schedule changes may be required under certain conditions:
- Unanticipated failures.
- Successful completion of principal-approved summer school courses.
- Technical errors.
- Approved academic level change.
Any other requests for a schedule change will be heard by administration on a case-by-case basis.
Beginning the Process - Program of Studies
The scheduling process begins in the spring. The Program of Studies is made available to students and reviewed during advisory, where students discuss their overall educational plans and schedule for the coming year. Middle school students participate in scheduling programs at the TRMC New Student Orientation Night and consult directly with TRMC administration and counselors. During individual group meetings, incoming students and families learn about specific courses and opportunities and are advised on their selections for the coming year.
Prerequisites, Admission Criteria, and Course Recommendation Appeals Process
Certain courses are sequential in nature and have prerequisites; these are noted in the course descriptions below. Certain criteria must also be met for enrollment in Honors, ECE/AP, and select academic courses, also noted below. If students and parents disagree with a placement recommendation, they should share their concerns with their advisor and school counselor.
A student who wishes to enroll in a course for which they have not been recommended may appeal. The first step is completing the TRMC course appeal form, which requires a parent signature, and turning it in to the main office by the deadline. Appeals are reviewed by the teachers in that content area. A final appeal meeting with TRMC administration may be requested by the student and parent, and TRMC administration makes the final decision following that meeting.
TRCC Dual Enrollment Courses
Taking a TRCC Dual Enrollment course is a collaborative effort among the student, the parent/guardian, and Three Rivers Middle College Magnet High School. Each party plays a role and must make a commitment to the expectations of this rigorous program. Students must meet TRCC academic standards as well as TRMC high school standards, and are recommended for these classes by their high school teachers.
The Scheduling Process
During the scheduling process, students meet with their school counselor to plan a course schedule. Students are recommended by high school teachers to take TRCC classes, and parents are asked to review and approve the schedule. Students may need to register for TRCC classes through the TRCC registration portal and by completing the TRCC application.
Master Schedule
Based on a student’s preliminary course selections, a master schedule will be developed. If a course is not offered, is over-enrolled, conflicts with another class meeting at the same time, or a placement recommendation changes, the student will conference with an advisor and/or counselor to make necessary adjustments. Otherwise, the courses for which a student pre-registers will be their course of study for the next school year whenever possible. Prior to the end of the school year, each student will receive their list of courses for the next year; teacher names or specific periods may not be available until the first day of school.
Student Responsibilities in the Scheduling Process
- Discuss recommendations with your advisor, counselor, and academic teachers, and inquire about teachers’ expectations for those classes.
- Discuss preliminary course selections with your parents.
- Read and discuss the Program of Studies with your parents.
- Have a parent approve your schedule.
- After receiving confirmation of your course selections, report any errors immediately to your advisor and/or counselor.
- Understand that the courses selected at this time will be your schedule of courses for the following year.
Add / Drop Policy
TRMC does not encourage students to drop courses during the school year; however, TRMC recognizes that extraordinary situations may require adding or dropping classes.
Adding a Different Course in Place of a Dropped Course
If a student wishes to withdraw from a course in order to add a different course in its place, the following must occur within the first two weeks of school: the student must discuss the possibility and advisability of the drop with their counselor and the class teacher. Teacher recommendations will be considered, and parent approval is required.
Dropping a TRCC Dual Enrollment Course
If a student wishes to drop a TRCC Dual Enrollment class to move to a college-prep course in the same subject area, the following must occur before October 1st: the student must discuss the possibility and advisability of the level change with their counselor and the class teacher. Teacher recommendations will be considered, and parent approval is required.
Dropping a Class After the Two-Week Window
The student must discuss the possibility and advisability of the drop with their counselor and the class teacher. Teacher recommendations will be considered, and parent approval is required. If the drop occurs after the drop period, the course and grade will appear on the student’s transcript as a “W” (withdraw).
