LEARN and Three Rivers Middle College (TRMC) are celebrating the academic success of two of their students recognized by the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Molly Starr, of Mystic, is a semifinalist for a National Merit Scholarship. She placed in the top 16,000 scorers out of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Starr is the first TRMC student to reach the level of semifinalist for National Merit Scholar. She achieved her qualifying scores while a junior at TRMC and is in consideration for significant scholarships for academic performance.

TRMC Principal Brad Columbus believes that Starr personifies the grit and hard work it takes to be successful at TRMC.  “Molly seeks out challenging courses and always looks to push herself,” Columbus said. “Last semester, even as a high school student, she was a teaching assistant in a Three Rivers Community College Spanish course.”

TRMC is a magnet high school where juniors and seniors have the opportunity to take classes at Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, earning transferrable college credits while completing their high school degrees. LEARN – the Regional Educational Service Center for southeastern Connecticut – administers TRMC.

Collin Aleksak, of Waterford, is also being recognized for his hard work and academic success. He qualified as a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student. The honor denotes that Aleksak is among the 34,000 students nationally recognized for “exceptional academic promise.” He scored among the top 50,000 students nationally on the PSAT.

Columbus said that Aleksak, a senior from Waterford, is an excellent student with a bright future head of him. “Collin is extremely gifted and has taken a rigorous plan of study.” His coursework this year is heavy on math and sciences, including Calculus-based Physics, Calculus II, Intro to Engineering, and Chemistry II.

In TRMC’s eight-year history, Aleksak is only the second scholar named a National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student.
